Gerresheimer Expands in the Global Pharmaceutical Plastic Business
The Gerresheimer Group expands its activities in the
pharmaceutical plastic business, with two strategically
significant investments in the USA and Europe. This week the
company is almost simultaneously opening a new research and
development center for medical plastic systems in the USA as well
as a new production center for pharmaceutical plastic packaging in
Spain.

Crown to Invest in New Beverage Can Plant in Brazil
Philadelphia, PA-based Crown Holdings, Inc. announced that its
Brazilian subsidiary, CROWN Embalagens S.A., plans to build a new
$60 million beverage can plant in Brazil. The new facility is
expected to be operational in the second quarter of 2011 and will
have an initial annual capacity of 700 million cans.

GM Adds a Third Shift at Three Assembly Plants in U.S.
General Motors Company will add a third shift at its Fairfax,
Kans.; Ft. Wayne, Ind.; and Lansing Delta Township, Mich. plants -
restoring 2,400 jobs and enabling GM to increase its manufacturing
plant utilization in the U.S.

AMBA Completes Successful Fall Conference in Washington DC
The
American Mold Builders Association (AMBA)
completed a successful 2009 Fall Conference in Washington, D.C.,
as AMBA members paved the way for the mold manufacturing
industry's continued push for fair trade, incentives to retain –
and regain – U.S. manufacturing, and other issues of importance to
U.S. mold manufacturers.

Huhtamaki Sells its Rigid Plastic Consumer Goods Business in South
Africa
Huhtamäki Oyj has
sold its rigid plastic production unit in Roodekop, South Africa, to
Polyoak Packaging (Pty) Ltd. The annual net sales of the unit is some
EUR 5 million and it currently employs some 55 people. The sold unit
serves the local edible fats and dairy markets and has dedicated
injection molding assets.

Milacron Businesses Exit Chapter 11
Milacron LLC announced this week that it has completed its
previously announced purchase of substantially all of the
businesses and assets of Milacron Inc. The new company is owned by
a group of investors led by Avenue Capital Group and DDJ Capital
Management LLC. The completion of this purchase enables the
Milacron businesses to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy and puts
them in a stronger competitive position than at any time in the
past decade.

The Society of
Plastics Engineers (SPE) has announced that the proceedings from its
Annual Technical Conference (ANTEC), which was held in June in
Chicago, are now available for purchase on thumb drives.

FDA Approves Constar's new DiamondClear® Technology for PET
Containers
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given Constar the
green light for its new DiamondClear® oxygen scavenging
technology for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) containers.
Effective June 22, Constar began selling DiamondClear for
packaging virtually all oxygen sensitive food and beverage
products, including tomato ketchup, salsas, pasta sauces, table
sauces, jams, jellies, ready-to-drink teas, juices, dairy, wine,
and other alcoholic beverages.

La Seda de Barcelona Restarting Operations in El Prat de Llobregat
La Seda de Barcelona, a company specializing in PET packaging
solutions, has been given the green light to a production restart
at its plant in El Prat de Llobregat. Industrial activity has been
set out and will be gradually increasing to reach 100% of its
installed capacity.

Activities
After three years, Rexam
inaugurated its new Bangalore plant on May 14. Rexam Pharma’s new
India facility is designed around a state-of-the-art, 1,000 sq.
meter class 8 cleanroom that is fully compliant with cGMP
standards and brings to India new technologies such as
child-resistant closures and its internationally renowned Rispharm
range for ophthalmology.

GF Automotive Launches Production at New
Kunshan Iron Foundry
For a number of years, GF Automotive has been producing aluminum
castings in China for the Chinese automotive industry. Now the
Swiss company's foundry will also manufacture cast iron components
locally. On May 15, the Kunshan iron foundry started up its
regular production.

StackTeck Announces Plans to Increase Capacity
StackTeck,
a global supplier of multi-cavity injection molds including
stack molds, molds for in-mold labeling, and packaging, has
announced it will invest more than $1.5 million in new machine
tools within the next year to increase capacity and improve lead
times in its customers’ new product launches.

Graham Packaging Advances Sustainability in PET Hot-Fill Bottles
Up to now, plastic bottles used in hot-filling had to have a
substantial amount of material in their base to stand up to the
rigors of the process. York, Pennsylvania-based Graham
Packaging has spent two years coming up with a new solution. The
magic, one might say, is in the technical details.

World Cap & Closure Demand to Reach $36.5 Billion in 2013
Global demand for caps and
closures is forecast to expand 4.2 percent per year through 2012
to $36.5 billion, representing 1.6 trillion units. However, over
the 2008-2010 period, growth in all regions will be negatively
impacted by the ongoing global economic malaise. Continuing
urbanization and rising personal incomes in the developing world
will support expansion of consumer nondurable goods markets,
with closures and other packaging materials among the primary
beneficiaries. Beverages will remain the dominant market for
caps and closures, accounting for 64 percent of unit demand in
2012. These and other trends are presented in World Caps &
Closures, a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc.,
a Cleveland-based industry research firm.

Volkswagen Opens New Plant in India
Volkswagen Group officially opened its new plant in India, on
March 31 in the presence of some 500 international guests. For
Volkswagen, the new production facility in Pune is a major
stepping stone towards achieving its ambitious growth targets on
the Indian subcontinent.

APEC Announces Expansion of Medical Manufacturing Facility
Baldwin Park, CA-based APEC, A Division of Helix Medical,
announced
the expansion of its
state-of-the-art medical device manufacturing operation in
Baldwin Park, California. The facility expansion includes three
new cleanrooms – a 10,000 square foot Class 100,000 cleanroom
(ISO Class 8) for injection molding and assembly, a Class
100,000 assembly room, and a Class 10,000 assembly room (ISO
Class 7). APEC has also doubled the size of their metrology lab
adding several pieces of leading edge equipment for color
inspection, measurement, and additional software.

Emerson Opens New Dubai Facility and Strengthens Presence in
Middle East
Emerson recently celebrated the official opening of its new
regional headquarters in Dubai. In its fiscal 2008, Emerson
posted sales of US$868 million in the Middle East region. The

Polymer Corporation, a leading manufacturer of low-volume,
close-tolerance plastic parts and assemblies based in Rockland,
Mass., announced that it has been acquired by Polymer’s management
team and lower-middle-market private equity firm Prospect
Partners, LLC, of Chicago, Ill. Polymer had been a portfolio
company of the private equity firm North American Fund, also of

Only five years after Perrysburg, OH-based Master Chemical began

UK Car Manufacturers and Suppliers Get £2.3bn of Loan Guarantees
Government business secretary Lord Mandelson has unveiled a
package of loans for car manufacturers and their major suppliers.
The cash is formed of £1.3bn from the European Investment Bank and
a further £1bn to fund investment in eco-friendly vehicle
development.

Preparations are gathering speed for the first International
Plastics Design Competition (IPDC), certain to be a celebrated
